Make in India Campaign

“Make in India” was launched in September 2014. On pmindia.gov.in, the prime minister explains that “since years policy-makers have been debating how to give an impetus to manufacturing in India and make India a Global Manufacturing in India and make India a Global Manufacturing Hub. But it is Narendra Modi, who within a matter of months, launched the ‘Make in India’ campaign to facilitate investment, foster innovation, enhance skill development, protect intellectual property & build best in class manufacturing infrastructure”.

But at the end of 2020, the ‘Make in India’ campaign is considered as a failure of the Government, and it is considered that to hide the failure of the campaign Prime Minister launches another campaign named “Atmanirbhar Bharat”. Any scheme or campaign is nothing without its implementation, as PM Narendra Modi led government fails to implement the ‘Make in India’ campaign. The government’s expectation of the campaign is not fulfilled for some reasons like Demonetization (2016), GST (Goods and Services Tax in 2017). Demonetization created problems of current assets and working capital which indirectly affects unemployment too. India’s GDP is continuously declining since 2016 as MSMEs are in a struggle. ‘Make in India’ campaign gave MSMEs hope to grow but some decisions like demonetization, GST is a nightmare for those MSMEs whose work is based on current assets, working capital, and daily wages.

As of now, the campaign name is changed to ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’. According to former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan, “The Atmanirbhar Bharat campaign should not lead to protectionism as such policies had not worked in the past, but it being used to promote manufacturing activity within the country would be useful.” Emerging-market governments need to spend a lot more on relief and repair work in the economy in the backdrop of the Covid-19 crisis. Spending on relief – such as helping viable MSMEs – is important to ensure that the productive capacity of the economy is not impaired. Make in India is a past form of Atmanitbhar Bharat and more or less established new concepts like Startups, social entrepreneurship, etc. Once again MSMEs hoping for the new campaign to grow its business.
